Ps3 controller won't connect?

Hi, I just bought a new dualshock 3 controller off the internet. It's an official Sony controller. When I try to connect it to my ps3 it connects to ports 1 and 2 at the same time and I can't do anything with it, all the ons are immobile. When I connect another sixaxis controller, it works fine. I've tried my new dualshock on my dad's ps3 and it works perfectly. I've tried all the usual stuff, resetting the controller, letting it charge, pairing it up using the cable. Any suggestions? Thanks
